European senior lines confirm new charges from Asia

Some of the largest shipping companies in Europe, Hapag Lloyd, CMA-CGM and Maersk have announced the implementation of new rates increases that will take effect in late August and September.

Firstly, Hapag Lloyd, since 18 August, has introduced a General Rate Increase (GRI) of US$250 per 20', 40' and high cube (HC) container, from Nhava Sheva and Mundra of India to Jeddah of Saudi Arabia, Aqaba of Jordan and Aden of Yemen.

Furthermore, the German carrier will apply a GRI of US$100 per standard unit, including HC, from Mundra to United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Shuwaikh, Dammam and Jubail, which will start today, 24 August.

A GRI will also be imposed by Hapag Lloyd for sailings from Pakistan to Arabian Gulf Ports and particularly to UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, Dammam and Jubail, beginning on 29 August. The increase will be US$50 per TEU and US$100 per FEU and HC for all dry cargoes.

In addition, the Hamburg-based liner operator will set the following updated ocean tariff rates for general-purpose 20', 40' and HC boxes, from the Indian Subcontinent to North Europe, effective from 15 September.

On the same date and with the same countries of origin, Hapag Lloyd will push up its ocean tariff rates for the same types of cargo to the Mediterranean ports, as follows:

Moreover, the French shipping group CMA-CGM will raise its prices from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Middle East Gulf, the Red Sea and Egypt to Canada East Coast ports inland destinations.

The surcharge will be US$300 per 20' all-type containers, US$400 per 40', 45' all types and 40' reefer containers, and US$600 per 45' boxes of all types.

Last but not least, the Danish carrier Maersk will introduce the following increase in ocean freight rate that will be applicable to all reefer containers from Vietnam to worldwide destinations and effective from 1 September.
