VIETNAM PARTNERS WITH CMA CGM TO DEVELOP A VND 13,000 BILLION MEGA PORT PROJECT IN HAI PHONG

A Strategic Leap Forward for the Logistics Industry

On May 26, French shipping company CMA CGM and Saigon Newport Corporation (SNP) – Vietnam’s largest port operator under the Ministry of National Defense – announced a partnership to develop a deep-sea port project at Berths No. 7 and 8 in the Lach Huyen Port Area, Hai Phong. The project has a total investment of approximately VND 12.793 trillion (equivalent to USD 600 million) and is expected to be operational by 2028, with an annual capacity of 1.9 million TEUs.

  • Project partners: CMA CGM – the largest container shipping company in France and the world’s third-largest by TEU volume – will jointly design, construct, and operate the new port with SNP.

  • Project scale: The port will include two berths totaling 900 meters in length, capable of handling container vessels up to 18,000 TEUs; a 200-meter barge berth; modern loading/unloading equipment, warehouses, and logistics infrastructure on a site of nearly 80 hectares.

  • Objective: To meet the growing demand for cargo handling in Northern Vietnam, where container throughput increases by an average of 15% annually.

🌟 Benefits for Vietnam’s Logistics Industry 🌟

Enhancing port infrastructure capacity:
The project will expand Hai Phong’s port capacity – the largest logistics hub in Northern Vietnam – helping to relieve pressure on existing ports and improve the ability to handle large vessels.

Boosting regional supply chains:
CMA CGM’s long-term presence in Vietnam strengthens the country’s position in the global supply chain, particularly as Vietnam emerges as a manufacturing alternative to China.

Technology and international management transfer:
CMA CGM brings valuable expertise in modern port operations, green technologies, and advanced management models, contributing to improvements in the quality of domestic logistics services.

Strengthening public–private collaboration:
The cooperation between a Vietnamese defense enterprise and a global logistics corporation reflects the growing openness and integration in Vietnam’s strategic infrastructure sector.

Job creation and sustainable development:
The project is expected to create approximately 600 direct jobs and promote socio-economic development in the Hai Phong area.

The Lach Huyen deep-sea port project marks a strategic milestone in enhancing Vietnam’s logistics capabilities, attracting international investment, and affirming the country’s role in the global supply chain.
