MSC UPDATES EMERGENCY FUEL SURCHARGE (EFS) FOR ASIA – U.S. & CANADA TRADE FROM JUNE 2026

The revised surcharge will take effect from June 1, 2026 (based on gate-in date) and will remain applicable until further notice.

Shipping line MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has officially announced an adjustment to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) for cargo shipments from Asia to the United States and Canada.

Pressure from the Global Fuel Market

MSC’s EFS adjustment comes amid significant volatility in global marine fuel (bunker) prices. Key contributing factors include:

  • Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East
  • Disruptions in fuel supply chains
  • Rising oil prices and unstable supply
  • Increased operational pressure on trans-Pacific shipping routes

These factors have directly driven up vessel operating costs, prompting carriers to adjust surcharges in order to maintain service stability and operational efficiency.

EFS Rates Effective from June 1, 2026

Asia – U.S. East Coast & Canada:

  • 20’DV: USD 213
  • 40’DV/HC: USD 426
  • 45’HC: USD 539
  • 20’RF: USD 320
  • 40’RF: USD 639

Asia – U.S. West Coast & Canada:

  • 20’DV: USD 270
  • 40’DV/HC: USD 540
  • 45’HC: USD 684
  • 20’RF: USD 405
  • 40’RF: USD 810

The above surcharges apply to both dry containers (DV/HC) and reefer containers (RF), reflecting increased fuel costs across the entire shipping operation.

Tensions at the Hormuz have moved beyond geopolitical risk and are now directly impacting international maritime operations. As one of the world’s most critical shipping chokepoints—handling nearly 20% of global oil flows and a significant share of container traffic to and from the Middle East—any disruption in this area can quickly trigger ripple effects across global supply chains.
